Many of you will be familiar with the founding of Activate - and it's not a rare thing for parents of a child with special needs to set off on a mission to improve something for everyone. In fact, we find that most people involved with Children with special needs have their own story and reason to be doing what they do. We wanted something better than a McLaren Major buggy for our 3 year old son who has Cerebral Palsy (Spastic Quadriplegia). With the tone imbalance that he has, we could see that he would be tipped over sideways all the time - and we didn't know at that time what a scoliosis was! The first thing we did back then in 2001 was to bring in a range of supportive buggies from Patron Bohemia in the Czech Republic - which we heard about from a friend in New Zealand (!) We were the first users of the Tom Cross Country in the UK, and have been joined by hundreds of other families in proving the durability of this postural buggy. The buggy range was in its early stages of development at that time and we worked closely with them to develop a better and improved range to meet the expectations of our health professionals and still retain the appearance that parents wanted. The Patron Buggy remains a central part of our business and the development continues today. You can see details of the new Jacko buggy a little later on. Our next move was to develop a powered wheelchair - especially for kids. We were provided with a powered wheelchair which was an adult compact wheelbase with a child sized seat unit (which we provided) mounted up on top. This Powerchair was not designed to go where kids go - as is the problem with so many products derived from adult equipment - and it  frequently tipped over. So there we were on the lounge floor, looking at how the clearance could be improved and the centre of gravity brought down lower. The first powered wheelchairs used the seating from the Tom Cross Country buggy, and then the improved Corgi seating units were introduced - giving more comfort and better posture. Our range grew to include seating, standing and walking equipment, which we brought in from various parts of Europe. In early 2008 the exchange rate devalued sharply and we realised that we could manufacture many of our products less expensively than we could import and improve the design at the same time. There were many products that were no longer viable, so we slimmed down our range to concentrate on what we did best. It was at this time, while drawing some plans for a much needed extension to accommodate the wheelchair lifestyle at home, that the inspiration for the MUSTANG came. We needed a product that a child would be proud of - that would make other kids jealous - that would make them want to go out - something really special. The MUSTANG fulfilled this dream and takes us into the export market spreading the benefit of this inspirational product. Alongside of this came the TANDEM buggy - with the provision for an extra child to travel on board. With so many mums stuck at home - unable to push a wheelchair and a buggy - the Tandem became an instant 'must-have'. You will see that the range hasdeveloped further to include a baby/toddler travel system, which gives complete integration into family life with the very latest high street fashion. We hope that there is something here for you
